Ludi Lin: Awaken Autumn

by Iris

For those who are unfamiliar with Ludi Lin, he is considered as one of Asia’s fastest rising stars and a true proponent of martial arts, having honed his skills in Thailand and Japan before embarking on his acting career. He has since scored action in Power Rangers, Aquaman and Mortal Kombat.

Teaming up with Karena Evans (Director, Actor and Producer) and Devery Jacob (Actor and Film maker) in Holt Renfrew’s Awaken Autumn campaign, Ludi Lin shares what grounds him, the importance of authentic storytelling, and show that the spirit of change lives within us all.

eG: You recently collaborated with Holt Renfrew for its Awaken Autumn campaign. What is this campaign about?

LL: This collaboration is very much about self expression and authentic representation.  What we wear is important,  but how we see ourselves, day to day, is equally if not more important.  Representation matters, and to do it right, we need to be truthful to ourselves, I need to be true to me.  I take inspiration from nature since I’m basically a naked monkey. Not many animals change their fur or feather as much as we change our clothes but the most important thing is they fit them perfectly and they can add and take away depending on the season.

Tom Ford Sweatshirt, $1,620 ; Tom Ford Pants, $1,655 ; Tom Ford Leather Belt, $1,440

eG: Why did Holt Renfrew choose you from your perspective?

LL: I think it’s probably because they saw me getting bubble tea from the shop across the street or perhaps because I try to speak up for my community against Racism.  Honestly, I doubt its for my fashion sense, because my fashion is super simple.  If I’m to wear something, it needs to be comfortable.

Junya Watanabe Quilted Jacket, $1,850 ; Off-White Nylon Pants, $780

eG: What did you want to express through this campaign?

LL: Hate against Asians is wrong.  We should not be prejudiced against another because of the colour of their skin.  Some of the clothes I’ve picked for this campaign have many colours in them, because i feel that all colours can come together, even in clothing, and still look good and harmonious.  Also, I hope that we can find a way to appreciate beauty without adding cruelty and move toward a society where what we wear on our bodies reflects who we are in our hearts.

Wool Pullover Knit, $990 ; Silk Printed Shirt, $1,590 ; Cotton Trousers, $1,290, all from FENDI

eG: What are your favourite fashion brands? what are your thoughts on fashion?

LL: Thom Browne, Tom Ford, Balanciega come to mind.  I like anything that is comfortable and fitted. I think you have to embody the clothing and not let the clothes define you. Like I said before, if you feel natural in it, then that’s your fashion.
