Your Sunscreen Questions, Answered

by Leslie Yip

As we roll into the season of Summer, it is more important than ever to take care of our skin. Whether your main concern is to preserve your skin tone, prevent sun-induced aging signs, protect overall skin health or all of the above, the use of sunscreen is an integral part of maintaining your health.

But do you really know how to choose and use the sunscreen that is right for you?

Recently, I asked my followers a few questions about sunscreen on social media, and there are some interesting responses. While I count myself as quite a diligent sunscreen user, I cannot claim to know everything about it, so I shared the result of my little questionnaire with Dr. Rolanda Wilkerson, Principal Beauty Scientist at Olay who provides further insights on SPF and sun protection.

First and foremost: do you wear sunscreen daily? One third replied that they use sunscreen everyday, and the rest replied that it depends on whether they are going outside, what activities they are doing, whether it is sunny, and the season.

Dr. Rolanda reminds us that “SPF should be applied everyday, no matter the season. UVA can damage the skin year round, even if it is cloudy out.”

Also, the sun’s UV rays can pass through windows as well, so you will need to apply sunscreen to your skin every day because you will still get sun exposure when you are driving or sitting by the window inside your house or your office.

One easy way to help you establish the good habit of wearing sunscreen year-round is to use a two-in-one moisturizer with SPF. To reap maximum benefits, choose one with multiple benefits, such as Olay Hyaluronic + Peptide24 Hydrating Moisturizer with SPF 30. It is formulated with dermatologist-recommended powerhouse ingredients such as hyaluronic acid for long-lasting hydration, niacinamide for brightening effects and anti-oxidant protection, and peptides for boosting collagen production. The formula’s smooth application absorbs quickly without leaving skin feeling greasy.

Olay Hyaluronic + Peptide24 hydrating moisturizer with SPF 30 is lightweight and gives you long-lasting hydration plus SPF 30 UVA/UVB sun protection. Available for $45.99* for 50 ml at Shoppers Drug Mart.  (*product prices are at the sole discretion of the retailer)

Another advantage of using two-in-one products is it feels lighter on the skin. A few people mentioned that they are not fond of using sunscreen everyday due to the sticky textures or greasy finishes. Olay’s Regenerist Whip Face Moisturizer with SPF 25 features innovative Active Rush Technology—it transforms from cream to liquid on skin and instantly leaves skin feeling light, dry and soft. Formulated with advanced Amino-Peptide Complex II, this SPF 25 moisturizer provides rich hydrating benefits while diminishing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and it is a great choice for those who are 35 years or older, or are looking for a more nourishing product.

Olay’s Regenerist Whip Face Moisturizer with SPF 25 delivers powerful anti-aging results with fast absorption and a breathable feel, making sticky and greasy sunscreens a thing of the past. Available for $42.99* for 50 ml at Shoppers Drug Mart (*product prices are at the sole discretion of the retailer)

Some are concerned that two-in-one products does not offer as much protection as a separate sunscreen. To this, Dr. Rolanda explains : “Two-in-one SPF products, such as moisturizers or foundations with added sun protection, can be effective if they have been formulated to provide sufficient sun protection and are used correctly. Ideally SPF facial products contain effective SPF protection as well as effective moisturizing skin benefits. The two-in-one products that meet the requirements of using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 25 or higher, such as Olay’s Regenerist Whip Face Moisturizer with SPF 25 and Olay Hyaluronic + Peptide24 Hydrating Moisturizer with SPF 30 can not only can provide effective sun protection in a super lightweight formula, but also provide long-lasting hydration without leaving skin feeling greasy.”

She points out that it can be easy to not apply enough SPF protection when using two-in-one make-up products that contain SPF, because a judgement of whether “enough” product has applied is often guided by the evenness or coverage of the make-up product rather than the ideal amount of SPF product needed for proper sun protection.

“Applying enough of the sunscreen is crucial for proper sun protection. For the amount, we recommend using two fingers (tips) worth, especially if they are bringing down to the neck. Whether you’re using a separate sunscreen or a two-in-one product, reapplication is recommended for extended sun exposure.”

What about the SPF number. Isn’t it the higher the better?

Dr. Rolanda says that it is a common misconception that a higher SPF value provides significantly better protection. “The relationship between SPF and actual sun protection is not linear and there is actually little difference in the protection!” Dr. Rolanda explains. “For example, SPF 50 blocks 98% of burning UV rays whereas SPF 25 blocks 96% of it. But SPF 50 has 2x the UV actives (which can be oily), can cost more money and feel heavier on the skin.”

Will these products leave a white cast on our face?

“A white cast is a typical after-effect of applying sunscreen, which leaves white or ashy residue on your skin.” Dr. Rolanda points out that this is mainly caused by the presence of certain ingredients in the sunscreen formulation, such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, that deflect the sun’s UV rays and provide a physical barrier against sun damage. “While white casts can be tricky to deal with, it is an indication that the sunscreen is working as intended. Additionally, if the sunscreen is not applied evenly or not properly rubbed into the skin, it can result in a more noticeable white cast.”

Due to Olay’s advanced technology and innovative formula craftsmanship, Olay’s two-in-one moisturizer with SPF is an ideal option this summer to protect our skin against sun exposure, as well as keep our skin hydrated all day without leaving  a white cast or feeling greasy.

With broad spectrum protection, no white cast, added skin benefits and a lovely texture, Olay’s  SPF products are designed as a convenient option to protect our skin against UVA/UVB rays while keeping skin hydrated all day and/or reducing the look of fine lines.
