The Very First Birkin Bag Sold for €8.58 Million

by Iris

A defining piece of fashion history has officially changed hands. The original Hermès Birkin bag—once carried by Jane Birkin herself—has been sold at Sotheby’s for an astonishing €8,582,500, setting a new benchmark for collectible luxury.

This isn’t just any Birkin. This is the very first Birkin bag, created in 1984 following a serendipitous meeting between British actress and singer Jane Birkin and Jean-Louis Dumas, then-artistic director and CEO of Hermès. The two met on an Air France flight where Birkin, juggling her baby and handbag, lamented the lack of a stylish, spacious carryall. Inspired by her plight, Dumas sketched the now-iconic silhouette mid-flight. The result? A bespoke leather bag gifted to Jane the following year—and a design destined to redefine luxury forever.

Offered in 1985 and named with Birkin’s blessing, the bag quickly became more than just a functional accessory. Over the decades, the Birkin has grown into a cultural icon, coveted by collectors, celebrities, and fashion connoisseurs alike. It has graced red carpets, editorial spreads, and pop culture moments, while variations in size, leather, and color have only amplified its desirability.

Yet none compare to this one: Jane Birkin’s original Birkin. Worn, personalized, and full of character, it is a symbol of authenticity and fashion’s enduring storytelling power. With its record-breaking sale, the legend of the Birkin not only lives on—it ascends.
