The Colognes Hermès offer a playground that is as infinite as it is masterly for exploring the sensory nature of materials and colours. They bring immediate and abundant pleasure that unites beyond genres, fashions, ages, or seasons. Eau de Basilic Pourpre is an invitation to enjoy the conviviality of summer, with its long al fresco lunches and sun-soaked Mediterranean aromas. Christine Nagel, director of creation and olfactory heritage for Hermès Parfums, instinctively associates these moments of shared joy with basil, a simple and perennial herb, and her absolute favourite that she dreams of bottling because it is “a burst of pleasure and freshness with an instantly recognisable herbal signature”.

Christine Nagel uses green basil as a base to create her interpretation of purple basil, whose aroma is deep and generous but which cannot be distilled. The bright, sunny colour of the former is juxtaposed with the very dark leaf of the latter. The tension between them increases, initiating a game of hide-and-seek as Calabrian bergamot makes a dazzling entrance, along with an irreverent little flash of geranium for a further freshness boost. Patchouli and spices add depth and sophistication.
The light, airy signature of the cologne is manifest, while the warmer notes give it a self-evident sensuality and complete the balance and longevity of the creation, prolonging the basil’s sparkling joy and increasing its complexity.
The bright, radical green of the Eau de Basilic Pourpre bottle evokes the green basil plant. A band of the same green strikes across its orange box in a play of contrasts that hints at its connection with purple basil. There is no doubt: Eau de Basilic Pourpre is a joyful invitation to dive into summer days.
