As one of the most storied automobile brands in history — and a revered one in China — Buick has achieved a resurgence in the Canadian market as General Motors’ fastest-growing brand. One of the models driving this resurgence is the built-in-China Buick Envision, whose year-over-year sales grew by 50% in 2025, with a remarkable 74% growth in the Toronto region. This demonstrates a growing appeal among Canadians (the Envision is also a best-seller in China), despite competing against several stalwarts in the compact SUV segment.
We wanted to evaluate the Envision for ourselves, so we spent a few days driving the top-line Avenir trim.

Standout style and technology
When we reviewed the larger Buick Enclave in late 2024, we noted that Buick’s distinctive styling and technology were key strengths that should attract more buyers over time.
Jamie Dewhurst, Buick Canada’s brand director, agrees with this assessment. Speaking with eliteGen at the recent Canadian International AutoShow, he said, “Over the last five years, we’ve seen the average age of an Envision buyer drop by four years — a sign that the 2024 redesign is resonating with younger customers. With updated styling and enhanced technology, Buick is broadening its appeal to younger, design- and tech-focused buyers, while still serving customers who value comfort, refinement, and premium features at an accessible price.”

Dewhurst further noted that one in three Envision buyers are new to the brand — an achievement that gives Buick the opportunity to cultivate lifelong customers.
To his point about design, the Envision Avenir presents a polished presence and, to our eyes, does not closely resemble any competitors — helping it stand out in a crowded segment. One design element we particularly appreciated is the unique slit-like LED headlights, which execute a visually pleasing 15-second sequence of coordinated flashes and light movements as you approach the vehicle. Touches like this enhance its sophisticated, high-tech appeal.

Driving experience and interior
Performance is not thrilling, but it is more than adequate. Its turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder engine produces 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, paired with a smooth-shifting conventional nine-speed automatic transmission. The Envision is more of a refined cruiser than a nimble rocket.

Inside, the Envision’s distinctive 30-inch-wide display houses driving information, infotainment functions, and various settings menus. The screens are easy to navigate and customize, and a well-positioned, console-mounted volume control knob is a welcome addition. However, the projected backup and 360-degree camera views appear too small, especially considering the expansive screen real estate available.

Rear-seat legroom is adequate, though overall comfort is compromised by a low, short seat cushion that lacks proper thigh support and seatbacks that do not recline far enough in their fixed positions. That said, the Avenir trim provides rear outboard passengers with heated seats, USB-A and USB-C charging ports, a 110V household-style power outlet, and a panoramic sunroof that extends to the second row, allowing for more natural light.
Other standout comfort and safety features offered in the Envision Avenir — rare in this segment — include:
- A driver-seat massaging function
- Blind Zone Steering Assist, which can automatically apply a firm steering input to guide the vehicle back into its lane if a potential collision is detected
- A head-up display and digital rearview mirror
- Teen Driver Technology, which allows parents to set speed and audio volume limits when their teenagers are driving

Quality recognition
Based on results from the annual U.S.-based J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study, Buick has ranked as the top mass-market brand for two consecutive years. The study evaluates vehicle dependability over a three-year ownership period. In the latest 2026 study, Buick not only led all mass-market brands but also ranked second overall, behind only Lexus — demonstrating the brand’s consistent quality control and user-friendly technology.
Dewhurst aptly summarizes our overall impression of the Envision, “The Envision Avenir is a compelling option for buyers seeking a premium compact gas-powered SUV. It offers upscale comfort, advanced technology, and premium features at a value-driven price — ideal for those not yet ready to transition to an EV or a full luxury model.”
