There is something captivating about the night—the stillness, the mystery and the sense of the unexpected that comes with venturing into the unknown. It is this nocturnal landscape that inspired Francis Kurkdjian, Dior Perfume Creative Director, to reimagine the iconic Sauvage in a richer and more intense form with Sauvage Extrait. True to Sauvage’s pioneering spirit, this new Extrait de Parfum pushes the limits of concentration, revealing a denser, more woody interpretation of the signature fragrance. Powerful yet intimate, it explores a darker and more sensual side of Sauvage, leaving an unmistakable imprint on the skin.
At the heart of the composition is precious Vietnamese oud essence, sourced through a Dior supplier that follows stringent standards of traceability and practices. One of the rarest and most prized raw materials in perfumery, oud wood is cultivated for more than a decade before being harvested. The wood is then reduced to powder and carefully distilled to reveal a precious essence with distinctive honey and frankincense facets.

In Sauvage Extrait, the oud reveals its animalic, leathery character against a rich landscape of noble woods, creating a captivating interplay of shadow and light. The dark, enveloping essence of Indonesian patchouli adds a smoky and mysterious dimension, contrasted by the lighter, creamy facets of Madagascan vetiver and Virginia cedarwood. Together, these woods create a sensual and powerful foundation, giving the fragrance its remarkable depth while retaining an elegant sense of balance.
The composition opens with the freshness of bergamot and AOP lavender essence from Provence, bringing a bright, aromatic lift to the intense woody heart. As the fragrance develops, the contrast between luminous freshness and darker, richer notes becomes increasingly apparent, drawing the senses deeper into its enveloping trail.
The exceptional intensity of Sauvage Extrait is also shaped by time. Once the raw materials are brought together, the formula is matured and macerated for 42 days. Over six weeks, the ingredients are given time to interact, converge and develop, allowing the composition to achieve greater harmony, richness and depth. The result is an extrait de parfum with remarkable concentration, power and long-lasting presence.
For Kurkdjian, creating Sauvage Extrait was like following a mysterious road through the night, surrounded by vast open landscapes and warm air carrying the scents of the desert. That journey becomes a metaphor for the fragrance itself, moving from the freshness of bergamot and lavender into the deeper world of oud, patchouli and noble woods. The result is instinctive yet sophisticated, powerful yet sensual—a fragrance that seems to draw the wearer further into the darkness.

The bottle echoes this nocturnal character. Its weighty glass takes on a deep midnight-blue hue through a sophisticated translucent interior lacquering technique, creating the impression of a drop of dark blue ink suspended within crystalline glass. The signature CD Monogram is engraved onto the bottle and repeated on the cap, crowning the design with a refined finishing touch.
