The Palme d’Or Turns 70: Chopard Celebrates Cinema’s Ultimate Prize

by Iris

This year, the Palme d’Or — cinema’s most coveted trophy — celebrates its 70th anniversary. As the Cannes Film Festival’s official partner since 1998, Chopard has proudly crafted the iconic award under the artistic direction of Caroline Scheufele. The 78th Cannes Film Festival returns from May 13–24, 2025, with acclaimed French actress Juliette Binoche leading the jury. Forty years after her Cannes debut, she’ll award the next Palme d’Or — a dazzling tribute to the timeless power of film.

A true jewel of the silver screen, the Palme d’Or is handcrafted in Chopard’s Haute Joaillerie workshops in Geneva. It takes 70 hours of meticulous work and 118 grams of ethical 18k gold, shaped with lost wax casting and mounted on hand-cut rock crystal. Since 2014, it has been made exclusively with responsibly sourced gold, reflecting Chopard’s commitment to sustainable luxury.

Though the award first appeared in 1955, it wasn’t until 1998 that Scheufele gave it a modern, meaningful redesign — complete with the Maison’s signature heart subtly tucked into the stem. That year, Theo Angelopoulos took home the first Chopard-made Palme d’Or for Eternity and a Day.

Over the decades, legendary filmmakers like Francis Ford Coppola, Ken Loach, and Jane Campion have received the prestigious prize. More recently, Ruben Östlund joined the rare club of two-time winners, taking home diamond-studded anniversary editions in 2017 and 2022.

In celebration of emerging cinematic talent, Chopard will once again present the Trophée Chopard during the 78th Cannes Film Festival. This year’s honorees are French actress Marie Colomb and Irish-British actor Finn Bennett, both recognized for their rising impact on international cinema.

Angelina Jolie

Academy Award-winning actress and humanitarian Angelina Jolie will serve as the award’s 2025 Godmother. Known for her wide-ranging work on and off screen, Jolie joins Chopard’s Co-President Caroline Scheufele to spotlight the next generation of storytellers. The award ceremony will take place on May 16 at a special Festival dinner on Carlton Beach, co-hosted by Iris Knobloch, Thierry Frémaux, and Caroline Scheufele.

Like the Palme d’Or, the Trophée is handcrafted by Chopard’s master artisans—a glittering testament to the Maison’s enduring passion for cinema.
